Both are plan-gated rather than broken. Birthday rewards and the referral program require the Growth plan or higher; on Free or Starter they are inactive regardless of how they are configured. The checkout extension is Pro-only and additionally requires Shopify Plus, since Shopify only allows checkout extensions on Plus stores.

Your plan
Open Billing & Plans. Birthday rewards and referrals need Growth or Pro; the checkout extension needs Pro on a Shopify Plus store.
The feature toggle
In Program Setup, check that Enable birthday rewards or Enable referral program is on, and that the program itself is active.
For a birthday: is the date saved?
The bonus goes only to members who added their birthday in the widget. It is paid by a daily job on the birthday itself, once per calendar year (a 29 February birthday is paid on 28 February in other years).
For a referral: did the friend join through the link and pay?
The friend must open the referral link and then join as a new member. The referrer is paid only when that friend’s first order is paid, not when they sign up.
How to fix it
- Upgrade in Billing & Plans, then switch the feature on in Program Setup.
- Ask the customer to add their birthday in the widget. A birthday that has already passed this year is paid next year.
- For a single missed award, add the points yourself on Customers → Adjust Points.
If it still is not working
Send us the customer’s email and what you expected, through contact support.
