Taking deposits

Charge a refundable deposit alongside the rental fee, taken in the same Shopify checkout transaction rather than separately.

Set a deposit amount on any rental product (a flat dollar amount). The deposit is charged to the customer at Shopify checkout alongside the rental fee, in a single transaction.

Managing deposits from the dashboard

Once a rental is returned, you handle the deposit from the booking record in the Miko dashboard:

  • Release deposit: when the customer returns the item in good condition, click Release Deposit. Miko initiates a refund of the deposit amount to the customer's original payment method via Shopify's refund API. The refund appears in the customer's Shopify order.
  • Forfeit deposit: if the item is damaged, not returned, or returned in an unacceptable condition, click Forfeit Deposit. The deposit is retained and no refund is issued.

All deposit actions are logged in the booking history with the action taken, the amount, and a timestamp. This audit trail is visible from the booking detail view.

Note: Deposit refunds are processed through Shopify and are subject to your payment provider's standard refund processing times (typically 5–10 business days for card refunds).
